Why virco®TYPE HIV-1?
Why virco®TYPE HIV-1 for resistance testing?
Virco's goal is to provide physicians and people living with HIV/AIDS with accurate, reliable and affordable information about the individual's virus and its susceptibility or resistance to antiretroviral drugs. Our purpose is to help clinicians make informed decisions about the optimal treatment strategy for each individual.
The two basic approaches to measuring HIV drug resistance are genotyping (establishing the profile of the virus in terms of mutations associated with drug resistance) and phenotyping (measuring in vitro the ability of an antiretroviral drug to suppress the virus).
As people living with HIV/AIDs survive longer and antiretroviral therapy (ART) use expands, the emergence of drug resistance requires ongoing surveillance and vigilance. Resistance testing is used to guide treatment choices for patients including:
- Prior to starting ART treatment to determine any transmitted drug resistance
- When ART begins to fail
- For those whose viral load is not completely suppressed after starting therapy
The Virco team is a passionate, strategic partner in the campaign against HIV/AIDS. The collective knowledge of the Virco team brings together decades of experience to track and report HIV resistance and susceptibility patterns.
